Are You Sitting With The Right Company?

September 25th, 2008 by Administrator

When I walked into Dallas’s famous Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse, all I wanted to do was to enjoy my New York Strip steak, relax and quietly review my notes for the following day’s speech. Little did I know that a valuable business lesson awaited me at the table.

The only other customer in the bar was a guy sitting in the corner pounding away on his laptop. He didn’t look up when I walked in. The bartender on the other hand noticed my nametag when I arrived and yelled, “Hey Scott! Grab a stool and have a drink!”

I walked over as he flung a coaster down and said, “What’ll you have?”

“Actually,” I said, looking at that man in corner, “I have some work to do. Is it cool if I grab one of those corner tables over there?”

“Sure, sit wherever you want,” he said.

I sat down at the table caddy-corner from Mr. Laptop. He had one of the new Apple G5’s. Nice computer, I thought. Briefly peering over at his screen, I saw that he was working online.

“Excuse me, but do you get high speed access in this bar?” I asked.

“Yeah! I’m set up with a wireless system. And it’s nice because I’d rather work here than in my hotel room.”

“Oh yeah, I know the feeling,” I replied. “That’s why I came here too.”

Pointing down at my nametag, he asked what convention I was attending. I smiled and told him, “Actually I always wear a nametag. It makes people friendlier and more approachable.” He chuckled, as most people often do when I give them my standard answer to this frequently asked question.

“Well Scott, it certainly worked on me! My name is Joachin. It’s nice to meet you.”

Joachin was a tech consultant from Orange County. He also flew in for the day to give a speech to one of his clients. Not surprisingly, we clicked instantly! And for the next hour, Joachin and I had one of those rare stranger conversations that covered just about every topic you could imagine. It was like we were old friends! And both of us seemed to have forgotten all about the work we’d each brought to the restaurant.

God I love it when that happens, I thought.

The more we got to know each other, the more it felt like our conversation could have lasted for hours. But it was getting late, and we both had big days ahead of us. So, after exchanging business cards and agreeing to drop each other a line sometime, Joachin left and returned to his hotel.

Wow! I’m so glad I talked to that guy! I said as I grabbed the notes for my speech. And as I took another bite of my steak, I also thought to myself, now wait a sec - something just happened here…

One of the principles of communication I often discuss in my workshops and books is called “Sitting With The Right Company.” This idea reminds us that every new encounter represents a choice. For instance, we can walk into a meeting, a party or even a restaurant and immediately seek out the easy seat. That seat could mean sitting all by ourselves or perhaps with a group of people we already know.

You’ll notice this will happen a lot at networking functions. Employees from the same company - who work together 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year - will always sit together.

Because it’s comfortable.

But sometimes, a temporary sacrifice in comfort is worth the value of the conversation that otherwise would not have existed. Sometimes you’ve just got to throw yourself out there. Sometimes you’ve got to break the silence and step onto the front porch of someone new.

Because you just never know. You never know whom you will meet, what you will learn or how it will reciprocate. Unfortunately, too many people are held captive by this comfort. And it is those people who are missing out on opportunities to enhance the net worth of their social capital. Sure, it’s easier to talk to people we already know. But there’s also something to be said for digging your well before you’re thirsty.

After I paid my check and hopped back into the cab, you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. The cab driver probably thought I was drunk! But for some reason, the conversation I had with Joachin gave me more energy than the seven dinner rolls I’d just eaten!

And MAN that was beautiful.

Now, will we become life long friends? I doubt it. Business associates? Certainly, that’s a possibility. But…will we either of us regret spending our meal talking and connecting with an exciting new person instead of sitting alone in a corner burying our noses in work?

No way. And in the end…

I was SO glad I didn’t sit at the bar.
I was SO glad I didn’t work on my speech.
And I was SO glad I DID sit with the right company.

How to Get Rid of the 4-letter S-Word

September 24th, 2008 by Administrator

Now don’t get all upset, as we are going to talk about the other S-word and that would be S*P*A*M. The * is in between the letters because just the use of this S-word can cause your email to not be delivered. The S-word is considered to have happened when you send an unsolicited email to someone. Unsolicited means they did not specifically request your information and this is where things get a little dicey. People subscribe to free offers online, but they forget to read the small print and that small print will tell them they are agreeing to receive offers from third parties. Their email is then sold to dozens of people who in turn might sell it to dozens of other people. The result is the person who wanted to get a free coupon to a restaurant will now start receiving offers for a variety of products and services. Now, most of these people who buy these leads are honest and caring people and if someone asks to be removed from their list, they will be removed. The problem comes from the real S-worders who buy large number of leads and will never remove an email address. Plus, if you click on the remove link, not only does it not remove you, but it confirms to these people that your email address is valid and they will start sending more junk to you. In addition, there is software that is readily available on the Internet that will allow someone to harvest millions of email addresses. Harvesting emails for those of you who do not know is the ability for this software to pick up your email from your webpage, a blog, an article, heck I would not be surprised if they can’t get my email address off my business card! So who do we blame for S-word?

1) We can blame the greedy people who subscribe to offers to get something free and do not read the fine print.

2) We can blame the greedy people who purchase these lists of greedy people who want to get something free and do not read the fine print and then these people who purchased the lists start blasting emails selling everything under the sun at rock bottom prices.

3) We can blame the greedy people who buy from the greedy people who purchase these lists of greedy people who want to get something free and do not read the fine print and then these people who purchased the lists start blasting emails selling everything under the sun at rock bottom prices.

4) We can blame the politicians and media who keep the S-word in the newspapers and on the front of everyone’s mind.

5) We can blame the Internet for being such an economical and practical marketing source.

6) We can blame the ISP’s who send the emails to their members and subscribers.

7) We can blame the Autoresponder companies. After all their services allow people to send lots of mail.

8) We can blame ourselves. Tough call isn’t it? The point is, we all have something to do with the S-word and we are all responsible for getting rid of it. When I first started in marketing, the Internet had not been invented yet and the way we promoted our company was to send direct mail. This was harmless because if someone did not want it, they could simply throw it away, but boy did we catch it from people who wanted to literally remove parts of our body that we had become quite fond of. You don’t hear much about direct mail anymore because the S-word has taken over the news. The problem is the S-word cannot be stopped by legislation or politicians or rules because the people who are really abusing the email system are using techniques so they cannot be tracked. The S-Cop site is out to get rid of the S-word and while I applaud their effort, going after the little guy is not going to get rid of the problem. The only way to get rid of the S-word outside of charging a fee to send and receive email is to educate people. We need to educate the greedy people who still think they can get something for free on the Internet. We need to educate the people who are purchasing lists of names in small quantities and sending multiple emails without giving the receiver a chance to breathe in between messages. We need to educate the Autoresponder providers to just say no to someone who wants to send bunches of email with purchased lists. We need to educate the people who continue to buy from the big S-worders because lets face it, if bulk email did not work, people would not send it. Someone is buying something from these people and whether they are doing it because they get a good price or because they are naive and believe the message, does not matter. The illegal drug trade would dry up if people did not continue to buy illegal drugs. Terrorism would stop being a way to change policies if the media did not give these people mention in their newspapers and on television and radio. The S-word is working for some people and it will continue to work and be a problem for all of us until everyone stops buying from them. The purpose of this article is to help educate people. If one person reads this article and avoids subscribing to get a free restaurant voucher, because he knows that he is going to get hit with bunches of emails, then we will have accomplished our goal. We, those of us working online need to make the S-word go away, because if we leave up to the politicians and lawyers, we the people who most depend on the Internet and email will be paying to send our email in the very near future. Personally, I do not want this to happen. I want the government and the lawyers as far away from the Internet as we can keep them because all in all the Internet works very well. However if we get the government involved, we might as well get prepared to start paying to send emails and also get use to 28k modems because they would take us back that far if they are allowed to interfere. S-word is not coming from the reputable companies and people online. S-word is coming from people that do not care about laws or what is right or wrong. They only care about the dollar and they won’t stop as long as they are making dollars, and they are only going to make dollars if people keep supporting them!

How To Work A Room

September 24th, 2008 by Administrator

Success is all about relationship building. The more people you know and who know you in a favorable way, the better your chances are of succeeding in everything you do. One of the best ways to make contacts and build relationships is to join different business organizations and attend their networking events.

The main objective of networking is to make contacts and build relationships with people who can help you in your career or business. You do this by asking questions, listening carefully to the answers, and be aware of any problems that you can solve at a later date.

To get the most out of a networking event you have to know how to work a room, which is why it’s important to understand that networking events combine business and pleasure. Here are ten ways to get the most out of any networking event:

1. Develop the proper attitude. This a not only a great marketing opportunity, you’re also there to have a good time.

2. Prepare your introduction. Most networking situations give you just a moment to talk about what you do. Clearly say your name and company name, along with a brief statement of what you do. Make it sound fascinating. Rehearse your introduction until it sounds natural, not memorized.

3. Have a ready selection of conversation starters. This is one of the reasons why it is so important for you to continuously educate yourself with industry news and current events. Read the daily newspaper every day, read magazines such as Time, Business Week, Entrepreneur, and Forbes. Read industry trade journals, and watch daily news programs on television. It’s also a good idea to be familiar with the current news about which ever organization is sponsoring the event. Be careful to stay away from politics, religion, and sex.

4. Remember, you are not there to look for sales. You’re there to look for leads, prospects, and for problems you can help solve. Look for people who you can network with, and possibly establish a fusion marketing relationship with. Talk to as many people as you can. Don’t overlook anyone. You never know when someone who doesn’t look like much of a prospect at first turns into a great source of direct business or referrals.

5. Have plenty of business cards, the type that open up into min-brochures. This type of business card is a great conversation starter. You can’t give a brochure out at a networking event, so your business cards are the next best thing.

6. Make eye contact and smile. Give your total attention to the other person when he or she is talking. Practice active listening. Show your interest by asking questions and paraphrasing back to the other person so you understand exactly what he or she is saying.

7. Eat and drink in moderation. If you must drink alcohol, nurse one slowly. Never chew gum or smoke, and go easy on the cologne and perfume.

8. The worst thing you can do at a networking event is offend someone. So use humor with discretion or avoid it all together.

9. Not all networking functions have the attendees wear name badges. If they don’t, when you meet someone for the first time, repeat his or her name back to them. This helps you remember better. If you do forget a person’s name whom you met earlier, don’t fake it or guess, just admit it up front and ask the person again.

10. Follow-up immediately after the event with a hand-written note, email, or a phone call. Your follow-up should have a warm and sincere tone, telling the person how much you enjoyed meeting him or her and mention one or two topics that you talked about.

When you attend a networking event, you have to walk a fine line between working and enjoying yourself. An impressive thing to do while working a room is to have a lot of fun. Having fun is an attribute at a networking event. Other people want to be around and talk to people who are fun.

If you want to get the most out of your next networking event, the key is not to work so hard, instead have some fun. That’s the best way to work a room.

Types of Straight Draws

September 22nd, 2008 by Administrator

There are three primary kinds of poker straight draws that you can make with almost any two cards. Generally, straight draws are considered more powerful when you are using both your hole cards to make the hand (ie: if you have A/10 and flop an open ended draw with a board of 8 / 9 / J, then you are only using one hold card for the draw and thus are therefore more likely to end up a chop situation than if you’d had 10 / J in the hole and the flop came 2 / 8 / 9).

The most commonly made straight draw in poker is the ‘belly buster,’ where there is only one card you can hit to make your straight. An example of this would be holding 8 / 9 and having a flop with two spaced straight cards such as 5 / 6, where you must hit a 7 and a 7 only to make the hand). This kind of draw happens the most and is not generally considered a hand worth paying to draw at.

The most commonly drawn after straight draw is the open-ended draw, where you can hit two cards to make your straight (ie: you hold 5 / 6 and the flop comes 3 / 4, where any deuce or seven will make your hand). This kind of draw gives you eight outs (assuming there is no flush draw), and against a made hand is most often has a 32% chance of being completed before the river.

A less common but often more powerful straight draw is the double-belly buster, where there are two cards you can hit to make your straight, but they are on both ends of the spectrum. An example of this draw would be holding Q / J and having a flop of A / 10 / 8, thus requiring a K or a 9 to make the straight. This kind of draw is often more valuable than an open ended draw as it is much more difficult for the opponent to see the draw filling in, whereas open ended straight draws are fairly obvious to the seasoned player.

The Forerunner: Elijah, the Prophet

September 20th, 2008 by Administrator

The Forerunner
The presence of Elijah, the Prophet in the Third Era.

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse”. Malachi 4:5,6

Who’s Elijah?

The Counsel of Elijah No. 1

1. I am Elijah, the prophet of the Third Era, of the transfiguration on Mount Tabor. Prepare yourselves for you have been given the Seven Seals, and the doors of mystery have been opened so that you may contemplate the path of your salvation.

2. Behold the word of God fulfilled, pronounced since remote times by His prophets.

3. Be it known that there is joy in the celestial mansions and that it is the Divine Master, the Sacrificed Lamb, whom John beheld in his revelation, who has opened the Sixth Seal with his most powerful and perfect hand and with it, the Third and last of the eras.

4 The light of the Sixth candlestick illuminates you, Humanity.

5. “Voice of the One who speaks in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, the prophet announced, and here I am, preparing the coming of my Lord, of your Heavenly Father, the Great Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God who spoke to Moses in the Sinai, and delivered the Law to His people.

6. So here, then, the promise is fulfilled, and He returns, surrounded by His angels, to reveal every mystery and to show the path of salvation to every spirit; for it is in this period that the prophecy shall be fulfilled, that “every flesh will see Him, and every spirit will feel Him.”

7. Therefore, be prepared, Oh Israel, to receive your Lord and God, for the era of the Holy Spirit has now begun among you.

8. Twenty-two precepts are the legacy of the envoys of the Three Eras, precepts which clarify and explain to you the Law of God, so that you may guide yourselves during your human existence in accordance with them.

9. These 22 precepts form in their unity the Law, and they are formed by the explanation of the Commandments that God delivered through Moses, the envoy of the First Era; through the teaching of Jesus, the envoy of the Second Era, and by the precepts through Elijah, the envoy of the Third Era, which are revealed to the people of Israel through Roque Rojas, as a prelude toward the opening of the Sixth Seal, and the third of the Eras, the first of September of 1866, in the Mexican Nation.

10. And these precepts are:

Spam the Spammer. Will It Work?

September 19th, 2008 by Administrator

Spam is everywhere. It’s the “in-box lunch meat” nobody likes, wants or looks forward too. Unfortunately, many folks enjoy “eating” this product because if they didn’t, there wouldn’t be any. Read on…

The federal government’s ill-conceived CAN-SPAM Act did little more than make a few legislators feel better about themselves. Did this legislation stop spam? No. Did it at least slow down the flow of spam? Nope.

You can’t eliminate a problem by treating the symptoms. If you want to eradicate a problem, you must make its environment one that will not support it.

There’s a new plan recently hatched by some well-intentioned folks at Blue Security that several of my clients have asked about. On the surface, it sounds like a good idea but, in my humble opinion, the model is fatally flawed. Here’s the scoop…

1. You sign up for their “list” which is basically a “do not spam me list” and that gives them the authorization to act on your behalf.

2. You then have to send EACH spam message to them for inclusion on their list.

3. They then send the spammer a “stop order” (which, if they can even find the spammer, will be ignored).

4. They then flood the spammer with basically a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack hoping to bring down the spammer’s server.

This all sounds great until you think about it rationally…

1. Spammers use “open relays” and hundreds of addresses to prevent you from finding their originating location.

2. The “stop order” they send is just their way of fulfilling the letter of the law under the CAN-Spam act.

3. The part I have the biggest problem with is they then effectively BECOME A SPAMMER by sending thousands of messages in a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS). This is the same thing hackers do when they bring down a website by sending so much traffic to a server it basically shuts down.

4. Most spam is sent from your neighbor’s PC. I spend a great amount of my time cleaning “bad guys” from client’s computers. There are MILLIONS of “zombie computers” that are infected with auto-dialers and trojans that are being used without the owner’s knowledge to send spam. Don’t believe me? Just run Counter Spy on grandma’s PC and tell me what you find!

5. How long do you really think it will be until the spammers turn the tables on Blue Security and initiate their own DDoS attack? It will be interesting to watch.

Other fight-back tactics against spammers have failed. Last year, Lycos Europe rolled out a screensaver that conducted DDoS attacks against known spammers. Within days, however, Lycos buckled under pressure from security groups, which called it vigilantism, and ISPs, who worried that attacks originating from their members would make them liable to legal action on the part of spammers.

Spam will NEVER go away until you attack its real source engine. If you don’t order anything from a spammer and don’t even click on his link to open the message, the monetary incentive for spam is removed. Spammers operate under the same economic rules as the rest of us…supply and demand.

Take away the demand and you eliminate the supply. Simple.

Your Regular Telephone Line or VOIP Phone Service?

September 19th, 2008 by Administrator

A mother from Miami, Florida has a son who is currently studying for his business administration degree at the University of North Carolina. She usually communicates to her son through their regular home telephone line.

Although she is willing to spend money just to check on her son at the university, she is now complaining about the high rates that the local Miami telephone company is imposing on long distance voice calls. Instead of communicating with her son regularly, she manages now to call twice in a month to save her money.

If you are just like that mother who wants to have a regular communication with her son but having a hard time budgeting her telephone bills, then VOIP phone service is the right one for you.

What is with the VOIP that will help you gain more savings? To start with, let us differentiate this new phone service from your regular telephone line.

The traditional landline phone you are currently using can be operated through the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). A private network reaches into your home through the standard phone jacks attached in your wall.

Now, the VOIP or the Voice over Internet Protocol allows you to make calls by connecting your phone set to the Internet over your modem (cable or DSL). You will be using the ATA or the analog telephone adapter plugged into your broadband modem. This will convert the electric pulses from your phone into Internet Protocol packets that pass through the Internet.

These are now digital signals (against the analog signals from your regular telephone lines) that your phone will be converting into a much clearer and better voice reproduction quality.

To have a clearer picture, this is how it works. For instance, you dial your friend’s number using VOIP phone service. Then he picked up the phone and say “Hello.” Now, that voice converts into the aforementioned electric pulses and transmits it into the IP packets. Before it reached your earpiece, these pulses are again converted into the original voice and you will now be hearing his voice.

However, the conversion is quite complex, rest assured that this phone system uses the secure and reliable transmission of data from one end to another.

Now, what makes it advantageous over the regular telephone line? The point here is that the VOIP phone service is much cheaper.

If you will heard a phone service provider that will advertise that their unlimited local and long distance call packages can be availed for as low as $20 a month, and then they are using VOIP phone system.

Another is that some of the features of the regular telephone line are free of charge in the VOIP phone service. Broadband service provider offers features such as call waiting, caller identification, speed dialing, conference calls and others free.

All you have to do is to subscribe to a VOIP phone service provider. You must have a personal computer, a reliable Internet connection (if your Internet service cuts off occasionally, so as your phone service), a modem, the analog telephone adaptor, and a phone set. Then you are now ready to say “Hi” and “Hello” to your friends and relatives without anymore thinking the cost of your call to them.

If you are still undecided, here is a cue for you to considermonthly subscription of $70 excluding long distance and international calls, or $20 worth of all the type of calls that you want, including other voice call features? It is now your choice.

Bob Hett has extensively covered the VoIP Service Provider industry as an analyst and has researched the various companies for factors based on price, reliability, support and overall quality. Learn more at VOIP Phone Service.
