1. Bag of Animal Crackers

Take a simple Ziploc back full of animal crackers. If the plastic Ziploc causes you concern find a small plastic cup. I can’t tell you how many times having a simple snack has helped occupy my daughter or ended the crying. Other things like the fish crackers, or granola bars work just as well.

2. Child scissors

If you carry scissor as part of a pocket knife, or finger nail clippers, or even pocket knife with just a blade, you are pretty much prepared for this one. I recommend child scissors for anyone else because your child will want to hold the scissors after you use them. On what? Straws. You want to be able to cut the straw down to a shorter size to make it easier to handle with the smaller cups that come with your childs drinks. Watching a child drink from a straw that is too long makes the need for this one obvious. You can often avoid picking up and holding the drink if the straw is shorter.

3. Handkerchief or Receiving blanket

This is true for toddlers as even more true for even younger children. You need something to wipe the noses, clean up the spills, and otherwise wipe away the tears that inevitably come with your adventures with your toddler.

4. Tiny flashlight

This can be a small flashlight or even a pen light. It is useful for entertainment for your toddler as well has helpful in finding what ever object has been dropped behind or under the back seat of the car.

5. 2 pieces of hard candy

My wife says I am cheating with I use this one, but if it works, then dad should use it. I try to have two pieces of candy with me for those moments that you need to stop the crying, persuade, or bribe your child into doing what daddy wants. Of course you can’t give candy to your children all the time, or as often as they would like, but there are moments when you are in a hurry that it works wonders. If you get to the point that your child is asking you for candy all the time, you are definitely doing this too often.

6. Picture of your child

This is as much for bragging rights as serving any useful purpose. I have discovered as a proud father that I can talk to anyone about my children. Pictures are always good. Just keep in mind that you may have to look at their pictures as well.

7. Moist Towlet (individual wet wipe)

What works best is those individual moist towlets like the ones you get at your BBQ restaurant. I think you can also find them at some gas stations. Either way, while having wet wipes with you is always a must, sometime you don’t have them available and having a single moist towlet tucked away can be a life saver. Especially after you used the candy and now your child is all sticky.

8. Extra Pair of sun glasses

If you don’t want your toddler reaching or wanting to play with your sun glasses, then you need an extra “cheap pair” or sun glasses for your toddler that actually fit them. There is nothing cooler than when my daughter want to wear her sun glasses to be like daddy.

9. Camera

My wife carries a digital camera in her purse. A disposable camera works as well. They even sell disposable digital cameras. No matter what you have, there are those moments when you are with your children that you wish you had a camera. Not to mention, if you ever are in a car accident, or witness one, a camera can be really important to have then as well.

10 Extra Emergency Diaper Bag

Take a gym bag and back if full of the same stuff as in the diaper bag. Include the wet wipes, diapers, a change of clothes etc. Keep it in your vehicle. If you have more than one vehicle, make one for each vehicle. When you forget the diaper bag or run out of something, you will be the hero for having thought ahead. You’ve probably heard the phrase “repetition is the mother of learning” well apparently it’s also the mother of teaching. Often it seems, Life - The Teacher uses the tool of repetition to imprint into our brains the lessons it’s needing to impart to us. At least this has been my experience.

It has become clear to me that life gives the same tests over, and over and over again until we demonstrate that we’ve learned the lesson by passing the test. This teacher seems more than happy to show us again and again why it may be a bad idea to take a particular action, or choose one direction over another. The good news here is that it works both ways. Like any good teacher choose properly and life smiles. Choose improperly and life corrects.

Sometimes I wish and think that it would be simpler and easier if the teacher would just make all of my decisions for me and let me know exactly what I’m supposed to do, but of course that’s not the way it works. In this teacher role life is just an administrator, not an advisor or counselor. Life is there to administer and grade the tests.

Once you pass the test however, Life records your grade and moves on to the next lesson. But don’t completely discard the lesson you’ve just learned as over because it’s not. You may not see or have to deal with this particular thing again for quite some time but you can bet at some point down the road you will see it again. The lessons and tests we’ve passed usually return in the form of pop quiz’s. Out of the blue one day an opportunity to display this lesson learned will pop up and you’ll have to conquer it all over again. If you fail or don’t score high enough on this little pop quiz you’ll have to deal with it more and more often until you pass the test again. Like starting over with it. The trick is to score high marks on the lessons because the higher the score the less often life throws it at you. Show a mastery of it, and it is presented as a test with much less frequency.

So the question: What are you tired of having to deal with day in and day out? What lesson do you feel life is beating you up with?

Want to get rid of it? Show life (and yourself) that you get it. Do whatever you need to do to display that you’ve mastered this particular lesson. Life will reciprocate by giving you a break from it. But remember, Life is smart. You can’t trick it. The higher degree to which you display a mastery of the lesson, the less frequently life will re-present it to you.

Office staff create a chart on said patient. This chart includes the demographics of the patients. In additonal to this there is also the patients physical/ medical information. After the patient finishes with the visit, the physician or qualified staff will assign a CPT code to the visit for medical billing. This CPT code (Current Procedural Terminology) defines the level of care that the patient received. This assigned code is based on the extent of the physical exam, the complexity of the medical visit and the patients medical history. The doctor will also offer a diagnosis for this patient and the visit. The diagnosis will have an attached number called an ICD -9-CM.

Both the CPT code and ICD 9 - CM along with the claim are then submitted to the insurance company by the Medical Billing specialist. The insurance company will then have their medical director review the claim. This review will determine the legitimacy of the claim based on the patients eligibility, medical necessity and the providers credentials.

If the claim is authorized then payment, at a percentage, will be made to the provider. If the claim is denied then a notice is sent to the provider with an explanation attached. This has to be researched, corrected and then resubmitted. This process can be repeated many times until the insurance company agrees to pay or the provider agrees to accept little or no payment for the service. Due to the increasing complexity of claims and data entry errors, it is not uncommon to see claims denied about 50% of the time.

Because of the complexity of many claims and the fact that providers both want and need all of their entitled reimbursement, it is very important the the medical billing person be a specialist in this area.
